Fading Eden: Green Spaces in Nasr CityResearch & Mapping
It is hard to find free public green parks in Cairo. Most of the well-maintained parks, whether public or private, are fenced and ticketed. Other green spaces across the city are neglected and not well-kept. The city of Cairo, a very crowded and dense city, has only a few free green spaces open for the public, like the ones along the Nile Corniche. Even in the most planned districts of Cairo like Nasr City, there is a major problem of accessibility with regards to public urban green parks. Nasr City was specifically chosen since it has
different typologies of urban green parks with varying degrees of accessibility; ranging from two main public fenced parks: The Children Park and The International Park, to other private fenced green parks and the district gardens amid the housing blocks. The research aims to map the different typologies of green parks and their varying levels of public accessibility and usage, with specific reference to Nasr City as a context for the study. While urban green spaces can be broadly defined as any vegetated areas found in the urban environment including forests, open spaces, lawns, residential gardens, parkways, pocket green spaces, or street trees, the research focuses only on the mini-parks, neighborhood parks, and district parks.
